Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing his 23-year journey with Portugal to an end. The 41-year-old shared an emotional farewell video on Thursday, November 5, reflecting on his career, the memories he created and what it meant to represent his country.
In the video posted on social media, Ronaldo revealed that he had made the difficult decision to step away from the national team and pass on Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt to the next generation.
“It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not made only with the head. They are also made with the heart,” Ronaldo said.

The announcement marks the end of one of the most successful international careers in football history. Since making his Portugal debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003, Ronaldo has made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals, holding the records for the most international appearances and goals in men’s football.
His achievements with Portugal include winning UEFA Euro 2016, the country’s first major international trophy, followed by UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. He also represented Portugal at six FIFA World Cups, including the 2026 tournament, where the team was eliminated by Spain in the Round of 16.
Beyond the records and trophies, Ronaldo’s farewell message focused on the emotional connection he developed with Portuguese supporters throughout his career.

“If one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it.”

He also reflected on the importance of football beyond the pitch, remembering Portuguese families, supporters living abroad and the millions of people who followed his journey over the past two decades.
His retirement comes following a difficult period with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo left the national team camp after being left on the bench during a Nations League fixture, leading to a 30-day suspension. Although he had previously expressed his intention to return, his latest announcement confirms his decision to close this chapter.
In his farewell, Ronaldo thanked his family, teammates, coaches, staff and Portuguese supporters for standing by him throughout his international career. He also spoke about the pride of wearing Portugal’s shirt and the childhood dream that began in Madeira.
While his international career comes to an end, Ronaldo remains a player for Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr.
For Portugal, his departure marks the end of an era defined by historic victories, record-breaking performances and more than two decades of unforgettable moments.
Ronaldo closed his farewell by making it clear that his connection to Portugal would remain long after his playing days with the national team.
“The number 7 shirt remains. The pride of having worn it will be mine forever. Portugal will always be part of me.”
