Like Carhartt enthusiasts who have never handled a power drill, many football-shirt aficionados can hardly juggle a ball. No matter. By now, football shirts are fully fashion. If you peruse the various kits for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which starts in June across North America, you will see more and more jerseys that could pass for streetwear. But let us not lose sight of a football shirt’s true purpose — to adorn the backs of the world’s best footballers in a quest for that coveted golden trophy.
This year’s field has expanded from 32 to 48 teams, which meant surveying nearly 100 different football shirts, home and away, to compile this list. (Yes, I looked at every single one.) The criteria for the shirt ranking? Nothing scientific. I considered how these shirts might look both on the pitch and on the street — so anything overly plain (see: Greece home) or overly ornate (see: Korea away) did not make the cut. To me, the best shirts serve both functions equally well.
Here are my picks for the top ten 2026 World Cup jerseys, ranked.
10. Country: Curaçao (away)

Maker: Adidas
In their qualifying run, Curaçao wore the most generic of Adidas templates — perhaps befitting a nation with fewer people than Kansas City. But then, improbably, they made the World Cup. And now Curaçao has bespoke shirts to commemorate being the smallest country ever to qualify. The away shirt pays tribute to the vivid colours of the Caribbean island’s buildings. Everything pops.

9. Country: Ivory Coast (home)

Maker: Puma
I am admittedly drawn to the bright orange that serves as the base colour for Les Éléphants. This year’s home shirt — with an all-over tonal pattern — is their best since the Didier Drogba era. It is part of a strong Puma collection for the World Cup, following the disappointing boxed-number kits of 2022.
8. Country: Brazil (away)

Maker: Jordan
The Jumpman’s first-ever appearance on a national team kit was originally intended to feature a red Brazil shirt, but Jordan reportedly changed course following negative online reaction to the colour switch. The final blue-and-black shirt, mimicking the colours of a poison dart frog, is a little dark for my liking, but the accent colours complement it well. Overall, it is an interesting, memorable look.
7. Country: South Africa (away)

Maker: Adidas
It is in the details for South Africa’s away shirt — the gold shoulder stripes, the two-tone collar, the vertical geometric pattern, and the triple logos (Trefoil, S.A. Football Association, and the Protea flower badge) across the chest. Green and gold is, moreover, an aesthetically pleasing colour combination.
6. Country: Morocco (away)

Maker: Puma
Morocco’s home shirt was a strong contender for this list, but I prefer the away. It is one of those shirts that feels like an instant classic. The red and green of the Moroccan flag appear around the neck of the jersey, with a traditional pattern in gold running down the centre. The detail is subtle enough to avoid being overbearing, yet not so understated that it fails to register on screen.
5. Country: Mexico (home)

Maker: Adidas
This is the shirt you will see in the very first match of the World Cup, when co-host Mexico takes on South Africa at the Estadio Azteca on 11 June. It is an obvious homage to the iconic 1998 ABA home shirt, minus the white collar, with a modernised — and inferior — badge. It also features a less-menacing Aztec-inspired graphic. Overall, it is a step down from the source material, but it remains a bold and striking design.
4. Country: Argentina (home)

Maker: Adidas
It is difficult to produce a poor Argentina home shirt, but Adidas has managed it before. Not this year. The defending champions will sport a familiar look with a compelling twist: the blue stripes feature a gradient effect incorporating the three shades of blue from the nation’s three previous World Cup titles — 1978, 1986, and 2022. This is, in all likelihood, Lionel Messi’s final World Cup shirt, which lends it an additional significance.
3. Country: United States (home)

Maker: Nike
The USMNT players were so dissatisfied with the 2022 kits that they insisted on being involved in the design process for 2026. After years of uninspiring looks, Nike has finally delivered something memorable. Drawing on the most beloved USA shirts — the 2012 ‘Waldos’ and the celebrated 1994 denim kits — the 2026 edition features horizontal red stripes arranged in a pattern that creates an undulating effect. A striking result.
2. Country: Japan (away)

Maker: Adidas
The official Adidas description for Japan’s away shirt states that it ‘celebrates the bond between team, supporters, and culture.’ Eleven of the 12 coloured vertical stripes pay tribute to the players, with the central red stripe representing ‘the Japanese football family.’ The meaning is debatable, but the shirt itself is undeniably beautiful — at once elegant and striking.
1. Country: France (home)

Maker: Nike
Ever since Nike outbid Adidas for Les Bleus in 2011, it has clearly prioritised the side for original design. With all of France’s 2026 group games held in the USA, both the home and away shirts pay homage to the Statue of Liberty. Both jerseys are impressive, but the collared home shirt — with its ‘FFF’ pattern and copper accents matching the colour of the original Lady Liberty — is the standout. The polo-style shirt opens to reveal a hidden red placket. Chapeau.
