Photography in Play: Middle East Archives’ Deck of Cards Returns

Originally launched in 2023, the newly updated deck features a refreshed design and a new selection of photographs taken by Olgaç Bozalp across the Middle East and beyond between 2016 and 2024.

Middle East Archives, a publishing platform known for its attentively curated books of archival imagery from the MENA region, has re-released a deck of cards featuring photography by Olgaç Bozalp.

Originally launched in 2023, the re-edition of Deck of Cards x Olgaç Bozalp introduces a new box design alongside a refreshed image selection. The photographs, taken by Bozalp between 2016 and 2024, span Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Oman, Morocco, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Kazakhstan.

Conceived as a playful and accessible way to engage with photography, the Deck of Cards invites images to be handled, shared, and experienced up close. By situating photography within one of the Middle East’s most cherished pastimes, the deck blurs the boundaries between art object and everyday ritual.

The Deck of Cards will be released as a collectible series, with each upcoming edition highlighting the work of a single photographer.

Founded as an Instagram account, Middle East Archives —established by Romaisa Baddar— began as a living feed of archival imagery from the region. Since then, the platform has expanded into publishing, releasing seven books to date, including its most widely recognised title, An Archive of Love
