Comic, director, and writer Mo Amer has been nominated, alongside co-creator and executive producer Harris Danow, for a Writers Guild Award in the Episodic Comedy category for “A Call From God,” the Season 2 finale of Mo. The series has been widely celebrated as one of the first major American television shows to centre a Palestinian-American refugee as its protagonist, marking a significant milestone for representation in mainstream television.

“A Call From God” serves as an emotional and narrative culmination of the Najjar family’s journey. The episode depicts the family finally receiving legal status in the United States after years of living under the constant threat of deportation. This long-awaited moment of stability allows them, for the first time, to travel freely, opening the door to a profoundly meaningful return to their ancestral village in Nablus. The homecoming stands as both a personal and symbolic resolution, bringing closure to tensions that have defined the series since its inception.

The finale’s emotional resonance is deeply rooted in Mo Amer’s own life. Filmed in Malta, which served as a stand-in for Palestine, the episode features Palestinian actors portraying Amer’s extended family, lending authenticity and cultural specificity to the story. Much of the episode was inspired by Amer’s real-life experiences visiting Palestine after obtaining U.S. citizenship in 2009.

Critics have praised “A Call From God” for its ability to balance comedy with emotional gravity while addressing themes of displacement, identity, and belonging without sacrificing nuance. That acclaim was further solidified when The New York Times named the episode one of the Best Episodes of 2025, citing its poignant storytelling and understated power. The Writers Guild Award nomination underscores the creative achievement of Amer and Danow and further cements Mo as a groundbreaking series, one that expands the boundaries of episodic comedy by weaving lived experience, political reality, and heartfelt storytelling into a deeply human conclusion.
