If you were an avid user of the internet in the late 2000’s, then you’ve probably heard of (or even used) EgyBest; the notorious pirating site that became a household name across the region. Widely dubbed as the Middle East’s answer to “The Pirate Bay,” EgyBest carved out a unique place in the digital landscape, becoming synonymous with accessible entertainment, whether shows or films, for millions.

The site’s journey hasn’t been without turbulence. In 2019, it went dark alongside a wave of other digital piracy platforms, including Mazzika Today, Shahid4u, and Cima4up, in what seemed like the end of an era.

Yet despite the shutdowns and legal pressures, EgyBest‘s cultural footprint proved remarkably resilient. The site maintained such a stronghold on regional audiences that its story transcended the digital realm entirely — a feature film chronicling its conception has wrapped up production and is set to be released this year.

And just last night, the first teaser of the film arrived, giving fans the first taste of what’s to come. The film boasts a compelling cast, led by Ahmed Malek and Salma Abu Deif, while also marking the highly anticipated acting debut of rapper Marwan Pablo.

Drawing from the true events that shaped the world of digital film piracy, the story takes viewers into the underground landscape of digital piracy, tracking two friends from El Marg whose devotion to cinema sparked the creation of a site that would soon sweep across the region.

With a screenplay by Ahmed Hosny, direction by Marwan Abdel Moneim, and backing from The Planet Studio, EgyBest promises to transform a controversial chapter of internet history in Egypt into compelling cinema, blurring the lines between piracy, accessibility, and cultural impact.
